Expo West Round Up

The 35th annual Natural Products Expo West, held March 4-8 in Anaheim, hosted over 71,000 industry members, more than 2,700 exhibiting companies and 634 first-time exhibitors. In addition to the traditional exhibit halls at the Anaheim Convention Center, new exhibitors showcased new products at the Hilton Hotel Anaheim. The largest Expo West ever reflects the NEXT Forecast that estimates the natural and organic products industry will grow to $252 billion by 2019.

The aisles were packed with visitors searching out the new and novel as well as the tried and true.

Nothing boosts your holistic hipster cred more than swigging from a bottle of coconut water, right? Wrong. That is sooo 2013. True trendsetters are quenching their eco-thirst with two new types of even pricier natural waters: maple and birch. But aside from the coolness factor, are these natural elixirs really better than plain old tap water? The producer of one tree water is even suggesting that its product (warning: potentially blasphemous comment ahead) is more healthful than kale.

Maple sap, a lightly sweet drink that French explorers recorded Native Americans imbibing centuries ago, could be making a comeback as a beverage in New York state, where it is being marketed as a locally sourced, natural alternative to energy and fitness drinks, or other natural beverages such as coconut water.
